Turkey to become CERN associate member

Turkey will be officially admitted as an associate member to CERN on Monday, May 12.

Turkey will be officially admitted to CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research as an associate member on Monday, May 12. Turkey will be a CERN associate member in a ceremony which will be held on Monday in Geneva, Switzerland with the participation of Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz.

The membership agreement should be approved by Turkish parliament (TBMM) in two years to become effective. Turkey will have a share in the organization depending on its contribution rate to CERN and will employ permanent scientists.

Turkey has had an observer state status in CERN since 1961. 

CERN is a European research organization whose purpose is to operate the world's largest particle physics laboratory. Established in 1954, the organization is based in the northwest suburbs of Geneva and has twenty European member states.
