Nuclear power accident at world's 5th largest plant

Accident at nuclear power plant in southeastern Ukraine causes power outages

Ukraine’s Prime Minister confirmed Wednesday that a nuclear power accident occurred in southeastern Ukraine at the world's fifth-largest nuclear plant at Zaporizhia.

The nature and severity of the accident was not disclosed.  However, power outages have occured as a result of the accident.

 The Ukrainian Energy and Coal Industry Ministry said that  the accident occurred in the power plant’s third block, which houses a 1,000-megawatt reactor. The exact cause of the accident is not yet known, the Mnistry said.

But Ukraine's Energy Minister Volodymyr Demchyshyn told the press that the accident posed no danger, and that the plant would again be up and running on Dec. 5. 

The statement said that power outages in the country were caused by the accident and caused the lack of coal in thermal power plants. Te ministry’s planed the block would start running again by Dec. 5.

The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant  is the country's largest nuclear power station, and the fifth largest in the world. About 46 percent of the country’s electricity is produced in nuclear plants.
